Why did Mercer give the Rangers detention

I was just watching the DT episodes where Mercer subs for Oliver's class. Some of the Rangers leave class to go fight a monster. Later on Mercer gives.them detention. But we know Mercer wasn't working with Mesagog and he knows their secret identities..Why would he still punish them?

He was just covering for himself. Since the Rangers new he was a hard ass. And why would he just let that go? It risked exposing his Mesagog secret. And he wanted to solve his problem himself. He made that clear to Trent.

I think it was more because Mercer was just a stickler. Even though he knew they had a good excuse. Plus he didn't want the rest of the class to think they could break the rules.

Because Mercer was evil! Its too bad Doctor Oliver didn't see through his lies. He should have but I guess he was too distracted. Plus Doug Sloan was around when they made the same mistake with Kat.

While I appreciate there effort to bring JDF back. I feel the writing for Doctor Oliver was lacking. It didn't do justice to his MMPR character. Which is why I don't count DT as canon.

I will say the whole Mercer is too proud to reveal he is Mesagog storyline to be stupid. It made no sense why he hid from Oliver. If anything he should have been begging hyim for Tommy's help. If not for his shake, for Trent's.

I think calling Mercer evil is going to far. He definitely didn't go along with Mesagog's plan and wanted to stop him. I think it was more he was too proud to admit his mistake. I think he also felt like he should be the one to fix his mistake. I would say this was flawed logic on his part and strongly selfish behavior. Which actually fits with his character. Remember this was the guy that tried to buy Hayley's Cyberspace out from under Hayley...Just so Trent could be a manager instead of a lowly worker. He definitely had a arrogant streak. I do think he was truly remorseful in the end and learned his lesson.

Its also possible his personality was effected by Mesagog. Which made him more arrogant. Also Mes was subconsciously protecting his identity. Mesagog did seem more evil after the full body split. Although Anton couldn't have been influencing that much, since he was still pretty sinister beforehand.

But I think Anton showed more remorse at the end because he was finally separated from Mesagog fully.

Tommy and Anton were both sinister people that cared more about their own egos then doing the right thing. Its not surprising Anton made this mistake. I don't think neither character was a true hero though. Far from it.

Mercer did seem pretty mean. But not as mean as Mesagog.
