no doubt with it being a confusing topic but he was a real person since he had a real body it was just Rita had trapped him in a time warp now whether he lost his body in the trapping or while residing in the time warp is unknown we don't even know if he kept his original form for all we know he just became energy that could take on a certain form.

Its pretty much implied that Zordon lost his physical body in the explosion that trapped him in the time warp.

not cheap that'd be a scene that censors wouldn't allow they had issues with showing Lokar's explosive end so they made it look like he left not to mention we've never seen any scenes of Rita trapping him in his time warp

MMPR Movie Zordon had his own backstory that wasn't fully fleshed out. Just like the Zordon in the latest movie has his own backstory.

Ironically the MMPR Movie wasn't in continuity but it was the first mention of Eltar.

Movie Zordon obviously wasn't stuck in a time warp the same way the tv version was. And it was most likely voluntarily to keep him alive to guide Ranger teams.
